Kara’s Helper

The morning sunlight streaming through the windows highlighted the joy and contentment that filled our home. JJ had just finished making lunch for our family in the kitchen, the aroma of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup wafting through the air, making everyone’s stomach growl with anticipation.

“I’m starving!” Sam exclaimed, running into the kitchen, followed closely by Crystal.

“And I’m here to help!” Johnny chimed in, his eyes fixed on the sandwiches.

Misty walked in with MJ in her arms, and Carl followed closely behind, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on Sarah, who was still engrossed in her phone.

“Can you put some napkins out?” Sam asked Cindy, who was busy helping Mom set the table.

“I’ll take care of it,” Cindy replied, smiling at her niece.

Kara gave JJ a hug and said, “Daniel will be here in a minute.” JJ returned the hug and replied, “I’m glad I made enough.”

Kara giggled and said, “You think you did, remember I’m eating for three.”

Kathryn chuckled and pulled Kara to the table to sit beside her, caressing her belly as she asked, “Have you found out yet what the babies’ sex are?”

Kara smiled and said, “Not yet, but Mom and Dad are coming over soon, and Maria and Michelle will be here too. When everyone is here, I’ll tell you all.”

Just then, the doorbell rang, and Alyssa got up to answer it. “I’ll take lunch to Uncle George,” she said, smiling at the group.

Mom started dishing out the soup, and the girls had put crackers out along with a couple of the items the family liked adding to the soup. JJ brought out a couple of large platters of sandwiches, and soon the table was set and lunch was ready.

“Okay, let’s eat!” Daniel said, sitting down beside Kara and taking her hand.

Kara looked up at the table, a little shy, but Kathryn came to her rescue, saying, “Let the poor pregnant woman have her lunch. The boys need all the food they can get.”

Kara giggled and shook her head, “No, you’re not right.”

She took a bite of her sandwich, and then looked at Daniel and said, “I know you want a son…”

But Daniel quickly interrupted her, saying, “I don’t care as long as the babies and you are healthy.”

Kara giggled again and said, “The doctor says we’re doing fine.”

But then she said something that made everyone’s eyes widen – “I’m having a boy and a girl.”

The room erupted in cheers and laughter as Daniel threw Kara into his arms, pulling her out of her chair and into his lap. They kissed passionately, and the rest of the family cheered and clapped for them.

When they finally broke apart, Daniel still held Kara on his lap, feeding her bites of sandwich as she giggled and kissed him back. It was a moment that none of us would ever forget.

And just then, JJ came out with a large bowl of apples with three scoops of ice cream. “For Kara,” he said, smiling at his wife.

Kara’s eyes went big as she said, “Thanks, JJ, how did you know what I was craving?”

And we all knew that this was just the beginning of a new chapter in our family’s life – one filled with joy, love, and anticipation for the new additions that were on the way.

As I help Kathryn out of our SUV, I’m struck by her beauty in her stunning prom dress. She looks radiant, and her smile lights up the entire evening. I lift her by the waist and set her on the sidewalk, spinning her around to prevent wrinkling her dress. Sam and Crystal giggle as I set them down, their dresses matching Kathryn’s perfectly.

The photographer is quick to capture the moment, snapping a few photos of us together before moving on to take pictures of our daughters. He even manages to capture a few shots of Daniel and Kara, who have just arrived, with Kara’s subtle belly bulge on full display.

We make our way to our table, which is set for six, and find ourselves seated next to Deborah and Jim. They’re a bit late, but it’s clear that Jim is smitten with Debs, and he beams with pride as he shows off her engagement ring.

As the night wears on, we dance and mingle with the other guests, catching up with friends and family. It’s clear that this is a night to remember, and I’m grateful to be sharing it with the people I love most.

“Mister Meyer, you’re being particularly charming tonight,” Kathryn says, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

“Mrs. Meyer, I’m just trying to live up to your expectations,” I reply, smiling back at her.

Sam and Crystal are having the time of their lives, dancing with their friends and laughing together. I watch them with a sense of pride and wonder, grateful for the joy they bring to our lives.

As the evening draws to a close, we make our way back to our SUV, tired but happy. It’s been a night to remember, and I know that this is a moment that we’ll all cherish for years to come.

“I’m so glad we could be here tonight,” Kathryn says, snuggling into my side as we drive home.

“Me too, my love,” I reply, putting my arm around her. “I’m grateful for every moment we share together.”

As we drive away from the prom, I know that this is just the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. We have a lot to look forward to, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for us.

As the night unfolds, I find myself lost in the beauty of Kathryn’s smile, her eyes sparkling like diamonds in the dim light of the dance floor. We sway to the rhythm of the music, our bodies moving in perfect harmony. I steal glances at her, drinking in the sight of her, feeling grateful for every moment we share together.

Kathryn’s hand rests on my chest, her fingers intertwined with mine, and I feel a rush of love and adoration for this incredible woman. I think back to the conversation we had earlier, when Joan jokingly asked if she could share me with her sisters, Kathryn’s shocked expression etched in my mind like a memory.

Kathryn’s thoughts echo in my mind, (You understand that you cannot keep a secret from me either. I know that you kept from laughing at hearing Joan ask to share. Is that when you found out?) I smile to myself, knowing that Kathryn has a knack for reading my mind, and I reply, (Yes, that is when it came to the forefront of your mind. You were able to keep it away from me until that moment.)

The music slows down, and Kathryn pulls me closer, her lips inches from mine. I can feel her warm breath on my skin, sending shivers down my spine. I lean in, my lips brushing against hers, and we share a tender kiss, the world around us melting away.

As we break apart, Kathryn looks up at me, her eyes shining with love and adoration. “How long have you known?” she asks, her voice barely above a whisper. I smile, knowing that I’ve known for just a moment, when Joan’s words brought it to the forefront of my mind. “Just tonight,” I reply, my voice low and husky.

Kathryn giggles, her eyes sparkling with mirth. “I guess I thought a little loud right then.” I chuckle, feeling a sense of amusement wash over me, and I lean in, my lips brushing against her ear. “I love it when I hear you think,” I whisper, my voice sending shivers down her spine.

The music continues to play, but I’m lost in the depths of Kathryn’s eyes, feeling a sense of connection and love that I’ve never felt before. We sway to the rhythm of the music, our bodies moving in perfect harmony, our hearts beating as one.

As the night wears on, I know that this is just the beginning of a new chapter in our lives, one filled with love, laughter, and adventure. And I’m grateful to have Kathryn by my side, to share in every moment, every joy, and every heartache that life may bring.

Speaking of which, I think back to the conversation we had earlier, when Kathryn mentioned that her doctor had given her clearance to resume our sexual activities. I feel a surge of excitement and anticipation, knowing that tonight is going to be special, a night we’ll always remember.

Kathryn’s thoughts echo in my mind, (I wanted to make it extra special, like our second first night together, as a married couple.) I smile to myself, knowing that Kathryn has a way of making every moment special, and I reply, (I’m glad we can make this night special, just us, together.)

Kathryn’s eyes sparkled as I slid the birthstone ring onto her right hand, the gems in order: Samantha’s, Crystal’s, and then Amanda’s birthstones. She smiled, and I could sense her thoughts dancing through our connection.

“I love it,” she mentally said, “but I knew about it for a week.” I chuckled aloud, “I was not trying to hide it, just waiting for the perfect moment to share it with you.”

Kathryn’s thoughts continued, “Oh well, I guess I will just have to make sure I never do anything I don’t want to share with you.” My response echoed through our minds, “My Love, there is nothing I do or will do that I am unwilling to share with you, because I am yours and yours alone.”

The music changed, a shag tune that Kathryn and I knew how to dance to, and we seamlessly moved into the steps. As we danced, a spotlight shone upon us, and we lost ourselves in the rhythm and the music. The students around us melted away, leaving us alone on the dance floor.

As the song ended, the students applauded, and we took our final bow. The prom king and queen were crowned, and Kathryn and I exchanged a glance, both of us lost in thought.

The student body president, Rachel, requested my presence on stage, along with Kathryn. We stepped onto the stage, hand-in-hand, and Rachel presented Kathryn with a bundle of red roses, one of the school’s colors.

“JJ and Kathryn Meyer graduated last year as co-valedictorians,” Rachel began, “and over the summer, they wed, adopted two young girls, and had a daughter of their own just born two months ago. That’s a lot to accomplish in their first year as newlyweds.”

Rachel continued, “JJ and Kathryn are a beloved fixture of our high school, and Kathryn has volunteered and spent many hours in our study hall, helping many students. Mister Meyer has also spent time there during his free period. Samantha Meyer, although young, is a member of our self-defense class here at this high school.”

The screen displayed a video of Sam tossing me for a loop on her first day of class, and the auditorium erupted in laughter. After the laughter died down, Rachel continued, “Unfortunately, this will be the last year that Mister Meyer will be able to share his wisdom with us.”

“The school board has decided to terminate his classes,” Rachel explained, “and they are unwilling to continue them. However, the students wish to file a petition to keep the self-defense classes going.”

The auditorium filled with “I’ll sign” being shouted by the students, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and gratitude. But as I looked at Kathryn, I knew this was painful for her.

I took Kathryn’s hand, and we communicated telepathically, my thoughts clear: “You know this is not about a crackpot lawyer; it’s about our wealth and how it makes us a target. The threats Daniel received are the cause.”

Kathryn’s response was immediate: “That’s what started it all, us trying to secure our homes. The school board realized if we were secure at home, the only place they could get to us is at school. They asked Dad to retire early for the same reason.”

We continued to communicate, our thoughts flowing easily. Kathryn apologized for not telling me sooner, and I felt a sense of understanding and forgiveness.

I passed on a little wisdom I learned from my law firm: “Lawyers never threatened to sue; they either sue or keep their mouth shut. If you’re going to sue someone, it’s best to do it with as little notice as possible.”

Rachel looked at me with understanding, and I could sense her relief. She asked me if I was okay with leaving, and I replied, “Leaving is going to be painful, but I know we don’t live in a perfect world.”

As we walked back to our table, Kathryn holding the roses and one hand, her arm in mine on the other side, I knew this was the end of an era. The party seemed to be over anyway, and the DJ was playing a last few songs as he began to gather his equipment.

Joan was still at the table beside us, and Kathryn giggled as I asked her if she needed a ride home. We walked out, and as we drove to the back of the parking lot, I couldn’t help but wonder what rumors would fly by Monday.

Kathryn laughed at the thought of Joan getting pregnant, and I flashed an image of us three together, our bond growing stronger with each passing moment. Kathryn’s response was immediate: “Maybe in a few years, I might let that happen.”

As we pulled up to Joan’s car, I glanced at Kathryn, and our eyes locked in a moment of understanding. We knew that this was more than just a rumor; it was a possibility, one that we would explore in the future.
