My First Day as a Candy Striper
As I walked into the hospital on my first day, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nerves. I had just turned sixteen and was eager to start my job as a Candy Striper. My mom, Tricia Cane, was a nurse at the hospital and had helped me get the job, but I was determined to prove myself and make a good impression.
“Good morning, sweetie,” my mom said, giving me a hug as she dropped me off at the hospital. “I know you’re going to do great. Just remember to listen to Hannah and do what she says.”
Hannah Hampstead, my head nurse, was one of my mom’s best friends, and I had heard great things about her. I was a bit intimidated as I made my way to the nurse’s station, but Hannah greeted me with a warm smile and introduced me to the rest of the staff.

But as much as I loved my job, I couldn’t help but feel a little self-conscious about my appearance. My dress was shorter than I had expected, and I found myself worrying that the staff would think I was too young or too inexperienced.
“Don’t worry about it, sweetie,” my mom said when I confided in her about my concerns. “You’re beautiful, and the staff will love you. Just be yourself and do your best, and you’ll be fine.”

“I’m Tricia’s daughter,” I said, trying to explain. “I’m here to help you out.”

“I’m just a little overwhelmed,” I admitted. “I’ve never seen a patient like Danny before.”
“Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it,” the nurse said, putting a hand on my shoulder. “Just take your time and do your best, and you’ll be fine.”
